The long two bearing water pump used of FMC 440 powered Chrysler engines (and NOTHING ELSE that any one has ever been able to find) is not available anywhere. Many FMCers have spent many hours looking for one. You can Contact and send your one FMC water Pump to - http://www.waterpumpkit.com/home.html - for rebuild. They have done a very good job for several FMCers for about $60 to rebuild + $hipping.

The alternative is to use a stock B/RB (B is 361, 383, and 400, RB is 413, 426W, 426H, and 440) Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth water pump as used on cars, pickup trucks, many Motor Homes, and Marine engines, that can be obtained at NAPA, On-line suppliers such as Summit, Juggs, Amazon, E-bay, other fine Auto Parts stores near you, or anyplace in the Country. Chrysler Corp made several MILLION engines with this type water pump, many of which are still running in vehicles all over the WORLD. New "Auto" type pumps are available from about $40 up and rebuilt pumps offered as cheap as $15.

Several FMCers have already made the switch to the "Auto" type pump. BUT . . . it requires some different spacers, and pulleys, and some planning, foresight, and decisions to collect the parts for the change over. The easiest way is use a "Auto" pump with a long spacer to get the 2-groove water pump pulley out so the belts stay aligned. That way, however, still uses the stock pulleys that require water pump or crankshaft (your choice) pulley removal to change/replace the Power Steering Belt. Send me an E (xjetmec@cox -dot- net) and I'll send you a picture of the stock FMC W-Pump next to the Auto type W-Pump w/spacer.

Another more serviceable and reliable change uses the "Auto" type water pump (available ANYWHERE) and changes to the pulleys, and belts, to only use 3 or 4 belts (2 belts ("stock FMC" Crank-AC Comp-Alternator, and either 1 or 2 belts Crank Power Steer-Water Pump and NO IDLER). The 3 belt system was used on hundreds (thousands ?) of SOB MHs (Some Other Brand Motor Home) that used the Chrysler 440 engine and seemed to be fine in all those applications. Details of such a 3 or 4 belt set-up are more than I care to write out here or on the Yahoo FMC Website. However, you, and anyone else is encouraged to visit my home shop in Scottsdale Aridzona for a full explanation and show and tell of the actual parts required for such a pump, pulley, belt set-up. (Please see Yahoo FMC Message #s 11156, 12914, 12920, and 10142)

Please remember that if the IDLER BEARING fails you are dead "in the water" just like if the water pump itself failed.

In the "final analysis" you have only two options with the FMC Long two bearing Water pump :

1) - Get your FMC Long two Bearing WP rebuilt by the guys in Houston (or any other place you can find), and realize that any trip you take is subject to WP FAILURE, that would require a week-10 day turn around for "another" rebuild, providing you get it off and reinstall it.

1a) - Look each and every day on E-bay and Craig's list for a spare FMC Long two bearing Water Pump and hope that you get it before some other FMCer gets it as FMC MHs are the ONLY USER.

2) Switch to a MOPAR AUTO TYPE Water Pump (available ANYWHERE) and a long spacer, and carry a spare Pump any place you travel in your FMC.

2a) Switch to a MOPAR AUTO TYPE Water Pump and pulleys/belts that gets rid of the IDLER , and does NOT require pulley removal to change Power Steering Belt.

Colorado Bill Sitton and I own a SPARE FMC long two bearing Water Pump, that resides at my shop in Scottsdale. It is available for EMERGENCY USE to any ON THE ROAD FMCer travelling thru the State of Aridzona, that can be delivered by me ASAP to where ever you are broken down in Arizona (for the cost of gas), or MAILED USPS, Fed EX, or UPS(Brown Truck) anyplace West of the Mississippi to any General Delivery POST OFFICE or FedEx,Brown "Office" in what ever podunk town you happen to be broken done in. It must be RETURNED within 30 days to me in Scottsdale, in working order, so that it can be used for an ON THE ROAD FMC WATER PUMP Emergency by the next FMCer. You get your pump fixed or whatever, but you must return OUR PUMP within 30 days of receipt. We also have an Auto Type Water Pump w/Spacer that can be temporarily used if for some reason you can't get a regular Chrysler Water Pump at some nearby Parts Store. I contribute a free Water Pump Gasket (Fel-Pro #11730).

Hello Lou. T
Thanks for the information on the switchover to the standard auto water pump. I plan on soon, changing to a standard GM two belt one wire 120 amp altenator and auto water pump, plus removing the idler pulley. While at it installing the fiberglass fan. What would you think about extending the fan housing - tunnel instead of the fan spacer. The extention could be made removeable giving more work space. In the event someday I was to install a Dodge overdrive transmission at that point the engine could be moved back a couple inchs move easily. I have had coach's 09 and 761 now 079. Please send pictures of the two water pumps and if you have it a picture of the front of the engine with the change over if you have one. As I understand this change you are going back to a standard Dodge auto 440 belt arrangement ? Any comments by others would be welcome. Thanks Frank Freda 079 (frankfreda@cox.net)

Sent some pictures of the water pumps for comparison, and some other pics about the change to an "auto" type pump.
I am in favor of SUCKING thru the radiator with a 20 inch stock Chrysler ALUMINUM Fan, and having a seal all around the radiator to prevent RECIRCULATION.
I also am in favor of a fan clutch (think it is easier on the WP Bearing and Seal) and a Fluid Damper on the crankshaft.
Please note the fan pilot on Auto Type pumps is 5/8 inch, where the FMC Pump is 1-1/8 inch. What ever fan, and/or fan clutch you use must fit the water pump PILOT.

In the PowerMaster Catalog (NOT the online catalog, but the one that you have to Download as a PDF file) they have a one wire CS10 type 140 Amp WITH A SIDE TERMINAL.
THAT is the one to use. (I will get that one, as soon as I get my Refund for the other 140 Amp (#47529 or #57529) one that they FORGOT to say FITS SMALL BLOCK MOPAR ONLY)

Please remember that the Allison 545 tranny is NOT and Overdrive, but only has a split first gear, compared to the stock FMC 727 3 speed tranny.

Bill Sitton and I have examined moving the engine and/or other ways to use Bill's Custom Overdrive 727/46RH Transmission, and conclude that moving the Diff forward 1.5 inches is the most reasonable change. Takes drilling four new holes. Nothing to buy, weld, cut make. We are still working on it, and a Diff mounted mechanical Park Break. News at 11.

Press ON ! Lou #120
