Location: Hartwell Ga | Hi everyone.
I am New to the FMC world, but I have worked on several other vintage motorhomes. Mainly the 70's gmc's. I am working on coach # 102 the coach is in great shape, but we noticed the left rear brake caliper is leaking around the piston. Does anyone have a caliper, caliper rebuild kit, or part #? I don't know when the disc brakes were converted over. The only thing I have to go by is a "190L" casting number and it appears to be about a 3 3/8" diameter piston. I called motor coach restoration several times last year, but I think they are out of business now. Thoughts?
Thanks
Chris in northeast Georgia

Location: Ignacio Colorado | The disc brake caliper does not suffer the same death as the wheel cylinders. That is because the sealing surface inside the caliper is on the replaceable piston. The inside of the casting is not a sealing surface as it is with the wheel cylinders. I don't have a part number for a kit presently but I would remove the caliper and get it taken apart. It has an outer rubber boot/seal, an inner square cut o-ring looking seal that fits into a groove in the caliper along with the piston. A rebuild kit will include both the rubber seals. Kits come either with or without pistons. You want the stainless steel piston, not the phenolic resin/plastic version. When the caliper is disassembled take it to napa and they will probably be able to match it up. The square cut seal is the one that does the real sealing of brake fluid, the outer boot seal is to keep outside dirt ect. out. If you have not had a caliper apart before I suggest having someone with experience doing it as it is easy to get bit while doing this, even the right way!
