Location: Scottsdale, Aridzona (24.251.160.88) | See that dyno sheet ? It starts at 3900 RPM. Makes good power at high RPM . . . but you can't back it out of the garage.
Cheap, fast, reliable. Pick two.

Location: Soquel, CA. (73.189.140.23) | Not that I would ever do it, but is there a modern Hemi version (with a good transmission...which one?) that would work in an FMC? The HP and Torque sure look good. Are the dimensions OK? I always figured an engine more suited to a muscle car would have some heat issues stuck in the back of an FMC under the typical long load conditions we usually have (long trips, grades, towing...). If you have a moment, educate me, so I stop fantasizing about it!

The modern hemi 6.4L (410hp/429ftlbs) backed with the 66RFE is in the Ram truck all the way up to the 3500 so its got plenty of heavy duty service history.
The difficulty with the hemi is in the tuning of the software, there is some support for it, but nothing like the support for the GM Gen III and IV engines.
I don't think it would be a problem dimensionally, there's lots of room back there...the modern engines have much more effective cooling systems so cooling it would be easier than your stock engine..
They've always been noted for poor mileage...but that's compared to other modern V8's, it would certainly be better than the stock 440.
If I were ever to consider a gas engine swap for an FMC I'd find a 8.1L Chev/GMC C4500/5500 Kodiak and get the Allison trans with it... The 8.1's are bulletproof and (in my old 16000lbs 27ft Trek Motorhome) get 9.5-10.5mpg consistantly.

Location: Scottsdale, Aridzona (24.251.160.88) | Every engine has a Design Operating Range. There are race engines, pick-up truck engines, aircraft tug engines, huge ship engines, jet engines . . . and lawn mower engines. They do not have the same operating RPM range. But many people are impressed with big numbers . . . no matter what they apply to. Count ON !, Lou #120

Location: Ignacio Colorado (75.121.82.111) | Gee did I miss the boat by putting a 2 barrel manifold and carb on the 440 with a cam so small it was ment to feed a lawn mower?
Not so far but I am yet to clear the driveway. Demolition derby is tomorrow. After that the FMC comes back into the main event. Tiny cam, (.366" lift) tiny carb, (under 400 cfm) , and it had the power to drag itself up the hill out of my shop with the right front brake hanging up. At over 6,000 feet elevation. Hmm! Back when it was stock it would not have had that kind of out the gate pulling power.
Sometimes less is more! Oh when it makes it to the pavement I get to try out the overdrive shoehorned in behind the 440.

Well, it is making 650ftlbs at 3900...probably still making 500ftlbs at 2900..
