When I was at the considering/evaluation stage, there were two main factors that pushed me into using the Duramax. One is the lighter weight of the engine and the second was the the much broader torque band. In practice, that wide torque band has been wonderful to work with for the last 44,000 miles or so. The Duramax torque band is from 1600 to 3200 rpm. Compare that to any other diesel you are considering.
Remember, once you start the project you have finish it!! There will be many things to figure out as Len and I and Rico and others found out. Read the above threads and the compete photo albums to see what all can be involved. The mechanical engines have a little less, but still lots of things to consider.
There are lots of "good" diesel engines out there. The question is "which one is best for the FMC?".
