Elite Veteran Location: Oceanside, CA | "have to cruise around 70 mph on 6th gear in order to keep the rpms were they need to be, below that we must keep it on 5th gear" This is pretty close to what I see...I stay in manual tap shift mode all the time, I only select 6th when I'm in the flats/down slopes and am running over 65(which is rare, I'm in 5th way more than 6th). This should put your gear ratio concerns to bed...stay under 70mph and you'll be in the same boat as we are for overdrive/total drive ratio...the Allison .71 5th gear and the 47re .69 4th are damn near a match..

Veteran Location: Olympia, Washington | I like the Oldsmobile analogy Lenny the trick is to get those suggestions in early ahead of time beat the lag.

Veteran Location: Houston, Texas | Our FMC has great steering control, we only had to changed the steering shaft “Rag Joint” and adjusted the steering box and is been great. Last time we went to Carthage MO, I asked Frank about the two front tires wearing uneven and after he inspected them, he suggested to adjust only the center link because both tires were toed in a bit too much, after we came back from Chama, we didn’t notice any more uneven wear so we think we got them dial in where they need to be. We are hoping we can install the rear Air Bags in the very near future, I’m going to look into cutting the front fresh water tank in 1/2 (maybe) there’s place in the Houston Texas área that can do that type of work, if successful, We would have a place to add weight at the front, unless the rear Airbags bring the front end down an inch or two ???? The front end feels light now and I know it could use some counterweight, maybe I will wait and see how far back I can install the air bags to see if it helps ???? You can pm me if you think I can be of any help or ????? Rico & Carmen 397 12 V Cummins & 6 speed Ally

Expert Location: Cottage Grove, OR | Do one thing at a time. Do rear airbags first and that will probably resolve the issues and then you won’t have to do any more.

Elite Veteran Location: Oceanside, CA | Rear air bags for sure. Move your spare tire up front...it's a noticeable difference. Move your starting/chassis batteries forward. Get the generator out of the engine bay.

Elite Veteran Location: Victoria, BC. Canada | Thanks Rico. I'll try not to be too much of a pest. Frank could well be the foremost source for Cummins swap feedback and I'll likely be sending him a question or two as I go. Lenny: I would argue that it would be good to keep a lighter version of genny behind the rear axle to provide at least some counterbalance for the offset of this much heavier engine. Now, if a guy was going to revamp the engine bed to move the engine over onto the center-line of the coach - like a transit - then, yes, I'd be totally on board with that idea. Looking for a usable weigh scale to weigh some this heavy stuff - like the rad and bumper etc - so I can better estimate what's worth doing (to save some weight) and what isn't. Cheers, Terry #846

Expert Location: Cottage Grove, OR | Adding the rear air bags will reduce the need be so aggressive with the weight issue as the balance point shifts rearward.

Elite Veteran Location: Victoria, BC. Canada | Maybe somebody can point me at these air-bags (brand/model # etc) so I can start learning about them. I'm assuming they provide a similar geometry as does the weight-distribution hitch for towing. Am I on the right track here? I gleaned a little from the pics Len posted of his trailing arm mod he welded up for his coach, but that's too over the top for me. My speed is more along the lines of Timbren rubber-spring jobbies :-0 Hey Stephen, I got more stars than you and mine are better colors! Ha-ha... yours is red; I know what my Yankee bro's think of red stars! ;-0 Terry #846

Extreme Veteran Location: Scottsdale, Aridzona | 1. Turn the body around on the chassis or put the engine in front. 2. Get rid of the Generator, just run the engine all the time like all the real Diesel Trucks do. 3. Get an Air Cooled Deutz Engine and get rid of the radiator. 4. Get an Air Bag Suspension Controller from those 70s Cadillacs . . . they worked real good . . . sometimes. 5, Sell it and call Uber. It still will NOT FLY . . . the Wings are TOO SHORT ! Got a bathroom scale ? Keep at it. Lou #120 Edited by hemi354az 2018-11-17 6:46 PM

Elite Veteran Location: Victoria, BC. Canada | All good advice Lou. I tried the bathroom scale method while holding - clean & jerk style - the 135 lb bumper; scale broke, wife's pissed! Terry #846

Extreme Veteran Location: Scottsdale, Aridzona | Carpenters have to make the math so complicated . . . 1. Weigh yourself. 2. Weigh yourself holding item. 3. Subtract Step 1 weight from Step 2 weight equals Item Weight. Everyone else. 1. Put Item on scale. 2. Read Number that equals Item Weight. Ain't Science/Math wunnerful ? Lou #120.
