Subject: Alternator failing

Shop just informed me that my alternator is failing. Should I have mine rebuilt or buy a new one?  What is the part number for stock? Or should I go with an upgrade?

"my alternator is failing". Duh ? What does that mean ? Does that "shop"(?) know that the Leece-Neville Alternator OUTPUT on a FMC is adjustable ? Have they ever seen a FMC before ? Have they ever seen a L-N Alternator before ?
I sent you the LINK to the FMC Manuals. The Alternator is Figure 4-21 Item 1. You are on the NETS. LOOK IT UP YOURSELF !

Maybe Mopars are too complicated for a Ford man. Do Fords have alternators ?

I have met your wife, Joyce. It would appear that you may have spent time looking at the 'surroundings' rather than the books as well.

My opinion is that most shops do not know how to adjust the output of a L-N. I was 'adjusting' the plug screw that covered the adjuster.and getting nowhere. I have had two L-Ns rebuilt.

The first one I had rebuilt was in need of most everything but the case. The shop said they could not help me, but they could send it out to a specialty shop that gives two-day service. Came back and worked fine putting out about 14 volts. They are the people that told me about the adjustment. The next place was a truck/commercial/farm equipment electric diagnostic and repair shop near my home. This place had more employees than teeth. Corn-on-the cob was not on their menu. They adjusted the alternator in the motor coach and it has worked great ever since.

I would like to have a newer one wire high output alternator, but I have no idea how to safely make the conversion.
