So I crawled under to make the oil change and discovered that due to the tip of the engine, there was no way all of the oil can drain. Short of dropping the pan, or adding another drain, or changing on a steep hill, what is the solution?

Change it often, and the residual oil will not be a problem. I change it after any trip where it will not be used for more than 2 months to get the acid out of the crankcase.
