I'm shopping for an FMC to do a Duramax Diesel and 6 speed Allison swap in and use to tow my 72 Jeep Commando rock crawler.
What are the major differences in the early to late model FMC's and are those significant advantages?
Thanks
Len

According to Jim Black of RVS and who worked for FMC at the time, there were 150 changes made at that time. Virtually all of them are of no consequence for your project. For your project you do want to avoid the earliest coaches that have the lower ceiling to the engine compartment. At some point in the early hundreds the ski/fishing pole storage compartment was eliminated and the top of the engine compartment raised. You will need that room.

It would also be best if you have the solid mounted rear bumper and not the shock absorber bumper. You will need those mounting points. This change also occurred well before the earl/late change which occurred between coach 645 and 646.

It is interesting to compare coaches at rallies as FMC made many changes "on the fly" as production continued. Small changes were still being made as the coaches passed the 1000 mark. At this point condition of the coach and not serial number should be your prime concern other than the two factors I mentioned above. If not doing a conversion, then those factors go away and all the changes fall into the personal preference category in my opinion.

Jim, can you recommend a ceramic coated header for #488 ?
