Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Ignacio Colorado | I am ready to fix the engine on #902. I plan to start the project very soon. My #1 option is to use the rebuilt engine out of FMC #412 that has 5,000mi,on it half of witch was the trip home from Florida. It is bored .040"over,had the wrong heads [no cooling passages around the spark plugs and gasketed spark plugs].I just rebuilt he heads on 902 real nice, I plan to use them. This is a turbocharged engine and runs or lives at 6,500' elevation. The donor engine has a steel crank, not the bigger rods, not sure yet on the cam [paperwork that came with the coach states HD 440 steel crank motorhome engine. The coach ran good on trip home ,only used 1.5qt. oil in 2300 mi. all of it landed on the radiator, leaking from the oil filter-adapter,for oil cooler-bad O ring. I plan to use the coach for mothers day {a must} longer range plans are to rebore the original big rod engine including having it ballanced. Any thoughts?

Contributor Location: Gilroy, Ca | Check on the pistons, They must be forged to hold up to the loads imposed by the turbocharger. Did the original piston(s) melt in the center? Do you have a control to retard the timing under boost? Also, keeping the heads cool is crucial to reducing detonation. Keep us posted. Take lots of pictures! Eric #587

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Ignacio Colorado | Stephen, Ill Be taking 902 to the lake today , still the used up 440. She fired right up yesterday afternoon, filled the water tanks, pumped up the system and found no apparent leaks. At 20 below any residual water will kill something. When we return I wont be able to put it off because we will be on our way to the top of montana the first of July. Bill #902

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Ignacio Colorado | Bill here again, the engine is out. The heads which were rebuilt last year(bronze guides, premium seals surfaced 4 hard seats) are back at the shop, Reface valves again, carbon from massive oil consumption was not kind to exhaust valves, and other 4 hard seats. Shiped water pump to texas for rebuild, should be shiped back on monday. The clock ticks as coach WILL leave for montana on 1st of july as scheduled. No melted pistons, the rings on the other hand are shot or were wrong from previous owners piston replacement. Top ring had 1/4" end gap (unbelievable). Will be using short block from #412 as stated earlier. I will however not use the turbo at this time as I want to give things time to break in before boosting. I have also secured a 2bbl intake manifold from a 59-60 383 engine which was built on the R/B configuration, the manifold deffinently fits, wonder what fuel economy it might get . The thermostat was still on top of the extention tube. hope relocation will help run cooler also plenty of grime in radiator fins. Was the proper t-stat just wrong location. Bill #902

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Ignacio Colorado | I guess I will be running without the turbo as it has ingested something, closed the gap on 3 spark plugs breaking 2. Turbo compressor damaged no time now all the turbo hardware is off and installed dual exhaust and the carb from #412 (my parts coach). Engine sounds fine now but I found a tiny ???? piece of metal up in a spark plug .1" dia and .020" thick. It looks like the threaded end of a carb throttle blade screw. Nothing missing from the carb I was using.??? Now I wont have to buy premium gold, I mean fuel. Hopefully will go many miles tomorrow. Bill #902

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cottage Grove, OR | Bill, We got the word that you made it to Idaho and are getting 7-8 mpg. That is great. Give us a longer report when you get back. Meanwhile have a great time at the family gathering.
