My cruise control will not hold its set speed. Any ideas? Has anybody changed to a later model cruise? Maybe one that is not vacuum. #617 Jim

Mine is a Rostra which is an electrical unit. It uses a magnetic pickup on the driveline and then uses a electrical coil to operate the throttle linkage. It maintains speed properly, but since it is was designed for cars the long throttle cable and it's resistance presents a challenge. If you have other than light throttle resistance due to either the spring tension or cable resistance it would not have enough pull.

I do like the responsiveness of the electrical vs the vacuum system.

Hi Jim; You may recall that 0890 has the King Cruise. http://www.cruisecontrolking.com/ It has worked great except for the time on I-40 OK/TX/NM? that the cable came in contact with the turbo and melted. They shipped me a new one at no charge (good support). If you want industrial strength, it's the way to go. Picture of most of it in the photo section. I did change the mounting location after the incident. If you want specifics, I think I can provide. If not, Chris can. I use cruise control a lot. Denny

Jim;
I have the original Perfect Circle Cruise control and have diagnosed some of the problems with the unit. The strangest of these was that the diaphram that connects to the carb had a blockage in it right in the tube---thanks to these little spiders that we have up here that build a nest of mud in an opening---usually 1/4" in diameter---like any of the quick disconnects on all of my air tools! After clearing that and working with an independent source of vacuum---I was able to set the low speed and allowance of throttle/speed while in the garage close enough to do the final set on the road test.
Do you have the Perfect Circle unit?
Sounds like your problem is due to a problem of a vacuum leak---common with these FMCs as the use 2 brake boosters with lots of connections to check valves and all--How are your brakes??? How is your carb response???
With a vacuum gage---what do you get for a reading at idle and at say 2000 rpm??? (Should be 15+ @ idle and around 20@ 2000).
Let me know and I will see what I can do----Barn

You should look in to the vakuum as Barney says.
Do not know what system is on your coach, but on my webpage www.fmcmotorcoach.com you will find som information on the original Speedostat. On the "fmc manuals" page there is a document listed under "other manuals" explaining the internals of the unit, and in the "service manual" chapter 40 "Auto el" the installation manual/service bulletin can be found.

Stay cool

To cruise responders---I thank everybody for your input. The brand name that I have was not where it could be found. I decided to follow Denny #890 lead and go modern with King Cruise. I hope to have it installed when they check my water leak right after Thanksgiving. Happy Holidays

Jim - smart move. If you need more info or pictures let me know/give me a call 678.525.9892. MCR makes a replacement throttle lever that both cables (existing and cruise) connects to. Makes it so the cruise control does not have to move the entire existing cable. Check with Chris. King Cruise uses two toggle switches - one is on/off, the other set/resume/accelerate. I have mine mounted above to the left of the shifter. Just a few inches from the steering wheel. Real handy. Oh.. make sure the cable from the controler stays away from the exhaust and turbo...<G>...Denny

I finally found time to road test my new King Cruise Control for 200 miles. I am very pleased. They had a little trouble but the factory helped them out. My #617 has another improvement that should have been taken care of when I bought the unit from the owner of other FMC's in state east of Missouri. The shop here in Missouri also replaced the 8.2 Detroit with another like engine. The first one only lasted 93,000. Did the first Detroit have a good rebuild job. I doubt it. Jim Woestman #617

Glad you have the King Cruise operational. Was wondering about it. I use mine almost every time I drive the coach. On the second part, I have concerns about the rebuilt 8.2L installed in 890 two years ago this summer. Need to find a good Detroit Diesel mechanic to go over it, at least adjust/replace injectors. Since we are leaving for the Mega early (reunion in KS June 5), might stop by Carthage overnight 1st or 2nd June. Will let you know for sure. In any case, look forward to seeing you and lots of coaches & people in the corn-husker state. Eleven coaches, 28 people registered at this point. Half dozen more verbally committed. Hoping for 30 coaches. Exciting!! Denny
