Hi EveryBuddy,
My wife Sarah & I have just purchased AMF Coach #1027. Hence I’ve signed up to this wonderful club. We are excited and perplexed with our new acquisition. When in my early thirties (almost 40 yrs, ago)I read a Road & Track issue that reviewed The AMF Motor Home. While raving about it’s many attributes they called it the “Corvette of Motor Homes”. I was immediately captivated, seeing it as a superior achievement in it’s field. Over the years of owning many different varieties and makes of rolling casitas I never lost my desire to own & travel in one…and now I (we) do. It’s a beaut.

The perplexing part is we can’t put it on the road because it is wandering all over the highway at speeds exceeding 45mph.

In addition the fuel injected idle starts out cold at about 7-800 rpm but when warmed up it sporadically, and without invitation, revs up to 2800 +. This generates a rush for me and white-knuckles for Sarah when pulling up to a stop light behind several other motorists.

After phoning Jeff Black in Morgan Hill about these issues I do have several suggestions to explore. However, we live in Sedona, AZ and haven’t found a qualified & trustworthy mechanic to do any work on our coach yet. My mechanical abilities are so limited I may have overstepped the required skill set to be a proud owner of a AMF.

Any suggestions from you fellow AMF lovers would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely and Longing to Travel,
Nano Nathan

Welcome to the forum!

The first thing we need to clarify is whether you have an FMC or an AMF as you refer to your unit above. Here is a link to what an AMF Skamper looks like: http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_437333-AMF-Skamper.html .

So, do you have an FMC or an AMF?

Hello Buddy,
I have FMC #120 in Scottsdale. I'm just east of the Shea Blvd exit of the 101. My #120 is currently on my lift. Come down for the day and I'll show you what some areas may be causing the wandering. You do not indicate what fuel injection is on your #1027. Look for some paperwork, and also obvious labels, stickers, cast names on any of the "stuff" around the top of the engine. I have some data on the Air Cruisers Injection that was popular in the earlier years of the FMC. Give me a call - 480/860-8772 (9AM/9PM)- and we can pick a day. Take some pictures of your engine and bring them to discuss, as well as any service records or other papers that you may find. I've got a lot of info, Parts Book, Service Manual, and "show and tell" spare parts, that will help you understand and enjoy your FMC. Wear some old clothes. Lots of beer, cokes, and canned ice tea in the shop fridge. Unfortunately, Sedona is world wide known for it's scenery, but is not the Motorhome repair center of the West. Think a visit will be worthwhile for you and your FMC. Lou Cruse.

Be sure to take Lou up on his offer!  He will be a great help to you if you will let him.

Hi Lou,
Thank you for your gracious offer. It is a thrill to have such a generous response. I can hardly wait to visit you and am working out the details with my wife. Can I visit you on a weekday as opposed to weekends? If so that will make it more realistic in our schedule. I also have a considerable amount of material on our 1027. All receipts, manuals and documentation.

The EFI unit is a discontinued affair by AiRSensors who, I'm told no longer produces the system or replacement parts. If the over revving problem can be corrected I won't seek to replace the fuel supply system. Otherwise, I'll be looking for alternatives. New make of EFI or back to a carburetor. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to meeting you and will call to set something up as soon as I hear about the weekday visit thing. Sincere Gratitude, Nano

Hi Nano, welcome to a very exclusive club.

My #110 had some wander when I first bought it in 2002. The issue (usually) is not in the front, but rear suspension. Sure you should look for play in the steering linkage, but I solved my wander by adding rubber stabalizers to the rear trailing arms. Cheap and easy solution! Also, spend extra money to upgrade your shocks to avoid 'porposing'

Happy trails!

Thank you Jim,
I'll use you advice and let the world know how our 1027 responds to the various ideas. With Gratitude, Nano
