Contributor ![]() | I replaced mine with a new one from here but they also said they would rebuild my old one as well. They seemed pretty knowledgeable. http://midweststeering.com/ Jon #094

Extreme Veteran ![]() Location: Scottsdale, Aridzona | Jon, Thanks for the link to a supplier. Would you share the PART NUMBER, and perhaps the PRICE of a NEW POWER STEERING BOX for the FMC as well. Thx, Lou #120

Contributor ![]() | So the steering gear for the early coaches is different that later coaches so this is the early steering gear Skipper this gear would not fit your coach as they turn in opposite directions. I believe the "later" coach gear may be less expensive since the rotation is standard. http://www.midweststeering.com/index.php?p=product&id=222&parent=23 $600

Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Victoria, BC. Canada | IIRC: Wasn't there also a limited production run of coaches with a special HD steering-gear set up? Perhaps the Transit's all got it but seems to me there were also some motorhomes got'em too? Think I remember reading about it the Parts Manual; again IIRC. Terry #846

Veteran ![]() Location: Soquel, CA. | Under what circumstances does the third option, the heavy duty gear assembly, get used? Does anyone know if it is interchangeable with either of the other options, the right hand and left hand gear assemblies?

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Ignacio Colorado | I don't know about interchange but the heavy duty box was used in these coaches. Coaches 00630, 00654, 00655, 00656, 00658, 00659, 00660, 00663, 00664, 00665, 00666, 00667, 00669, 00680, 00682, 00684, 00686, 00688, 00690, 00692, 00694, and 00696, This is from the parts manual As Kjetil pointed out. They are close to twice the size of the standard unit looking at the drawings of the box. Must not have been what they hoped as it was only put into 22 coaches. Maybe that is all of the HD boxes they found in the corner during production. Probably fits some military vehicle produced by FMC before the coach line. Again looking at the drawings on pg 7-17 and 7-18 after following the link in Kjetil's post. The box must be much larger than the standard gear box. It appears the HD box was only used with the late coach steering system. Not used with early system. Looks like about half of the first 50 coaches built with the late system got the HD box. It must not have made improvements so the standard box was used through out the rest of production. Gee guys, It is all in the information available to all of us. Point click and ship, OK so some deduction was needed. Bill Sitton FMCx5

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cottage Grove, OR | "It appears the HD box was only used with the late coach steering system." Based on the above numbers that is true of all but coach #00630 as that is an "early" coach. The early/late division was between coaches #0645 and #0646.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Ignacio Colorado | Not to confuse anyone but coach #630 was the test coach for the late model steering system. Even though it is numbered before the change it has late model steering components. The change then took place at coach #645 on. Bill
