Hey everyone glad to be a part of such a great community, it's refreshing to see that some people still know what that word "community" still means. I recently purchased coach #642 and am in the process of going through everything to bring her up to snuff. As I was changing the exhaust manifold looking at the engine from the radiator in the front, it would be the one on the right side I noticed some orange stuff around the left outside bolt, and thought it was very strange and sure enough when I took off the manifold the part with the bolt stayed on the engine. Apparently this was someone's kicker mouse way of trying to solve the problem of a broken manifold. So now I am looking for a manifold for my coach to replace the one that is cracked. As far as I can tell the other side is still intact, and if it ain't broke don't fix it right! So if anyone out there has a manifold that they would like to sell to me I would be very grateful to have found one at a reasonable price. Thank you all for listening to my story and considering if you have or know someone that does have a manifold for sale please feel free to contact me by email. trinitycrow3@gmail.com or by phone 831-600-5466 my name is Veronica Crow and I am glad to meet you all. See you on the road or at a rally, who knows where but we all like to drive our coaches and live the life, that only a class A Motor Coach like ours can give us. Hope you all are well and enjoying your coach as much as I am enjoying mine

The exhaust manifold studs (if you still have any) are tapped thru the head into the water jacket. If one, or more, comes out . . . engine coolant will come RUNNING out. If that happens, STICK THE STUD/BOLT right back in QUICK, then drain coolant from radiator and engine at lower radiator hose to radiator, then go back to removing/replacing the manifold and stud(s). Each head should have six equal length studs sticking out. Use LocTite #272 on the studs to seal and lock them to the head. Use copper head gaskets.

Orange stuff ? If PO used DEXCOOL in the radiator . . . GET IT OUT OF THERE ! DEXCOOL IS DEATH ! Use ONLY GREEN ANTI FREEZE 50-50 mix with distilled water in cooling system.

Veronica, are you the mechanic ?

Yes, I am the mechanic and learning fast that the FMC is a magnificent work of machinery beautifully designed, well crafted, and a joy to drive. Thanks for the link for the manifold, exactly what I needed, and for the advise of the proper coolant to use. I sure am glad that I had already drained the radiator to flush the system and thought while I'm here I may as well change the manifold gasket. Imagine my surprise when I removed the two center bolts and water came out, not that much because the radiator was drained thank God, that certainly was a learning experience for me as has Mia's if the work I have done. I never have worked on a mobile home let alone such an elegant coach as the FMC, worked on a lot of cars but this is completely different. Thanks again for all your help and advise, it is most appreciated. Happy motoring.

Veronica - "when I removed the two center bolts and water came out" ???

The two center "attachments" on a 440 engine are supposed to be a unique type of sleeve nut that go on the STUDS that are sticking out of the head. You need four (4) of these -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/383-440-Big-Block-Long-Exhaust-Manifold-Sleeve-Nut-GTX-Charger-Roadrunner-Mopar-/371248282210?hash=item56701f3a62&vxp=mtr

There are long ones and short ones. The center dump hi-log exhaust manifold used on the 440 in a FMC takes two of the long sleeve nuts on each manifold.

Some PO probably did not use anti-seize on the studs sticking out of the head, so the sleeve nut rusted/seized to the stud and that screwed the stud out when it the manifold was removed, so he just put a long BOLT back in. That is why water came out. The head is supposed to have Exhaust Manifold STUDS to keep the coolant from running out. If you install six (6) studs in each head, and use anti-seize compound on the studs for the 4 nuts on the ends, and two sleeve nuts in the middle, you will not have this issue next time.

Lou,

The shipping on those is $4.79 ea. I have used this place below before:

http://www.partsmix.com/mopar-383-400-440-big-block-exhaust-manifol...

They are $28 for 4 plus about $8.25 for priority mail shipping. If eBay seller won't combine shipping, this is an alternative.

Hey Lou thanks for the tip in the bolts on the manifold you sure do know your coach, and everything on it. You were right there wasn't any sleeve on the bolts when I removed them so I went to NAPA and bought the right ones and all new nuts and bolts for the rest of the manifold, the fan and the water pump, and thermostat and will make sure to use some anti-seize material on them before I reassemble all the parts. I really appreciate all your help everyone more than you can imagine and hope to see you all at one of the rally's soon so you can see how all my hard work paid off and meet BlueMoon that's her name. Again thank you all very much for your time and information.
With much appreciation and respect

Bolts ?   Bolts ? BOLTS ???

There are NO BOLTS !!! Only STUDS !!!!

Arggggggggh , I'm surrounded by ASSASSINS ! (Jimmie Durante)

Words have meanings, to help distinguish between a Spinach Souffle, a desk chair, the Grand Canyon . . . and other things.

The spelling is so all the words don't look alike.

The guy behind the Parts Counter (even at NAPA) is a COUNTER GUY, NOT a MECHANIC. He only knows what is in his "computer" which was put there by a Super Geek that probably has never changed a flat or nailed two boards together. Next time you go there ask him the difference in a B and a RB Chrysler engine. Remember the engine in the FMC has not been made since 1978, which could have been before he was born.

Putt, putt, putt ON!

Lou #120

ps: this is MEANT to be funny. Please take it that way. Thx.
