With the revamped 518 (Franken-Flyte) petty much ready to find it's way into an FMC here are some of the proposed procedures to shoehorn a 2" longer transmission into the coach. When Stephen swapped his 727 for an Allison 4 spd he also had to find room for the extra 2" involved with the Allison change. He cut the engine cross member to move the engine towards the rear. His 440 used a 12 qt. pan and required his cross member to undergo major surgery.

Another plan is to drop the differential and re-drill the mounting bars to mount the differential 2" forward.

My plan is to grind the welds off of the engine mount perches on the engine cross member and re-align the transmission and differential then weld them back down. Instead of reworking (removing a large amount of) the cross member for oil pan clearance I will use a car oil pan from a 1970-71 383-440 HP. This pan has the same volume as the stock pan on the 440 in the FMC and will clear the cross member without any other clearance work. It has a longer center sump and does not sit as low as the original FMC pan.

Having a real winter in Colorado this year so nothing happening with the coach for a while.

Seasons Greetings and thanks for the update Billy.

I have 2 questions:

1) The Franken-Flyte is 2 inches longer than the stock 727, does that measurement include a park-brake?
2) Which one of your coaches goes under the knife to get this new baby bolted to her?

Knowing you as the 'purist' that I do, I imagine this won't be easy for you to start changing sh*t.

Good luck my Friend.

Terry, The Franken-Flyte is only 1 & 1/8th inch longer than the 727 but an adapter is required to bolt it to the 440. The adapter is 1/2" thick so 1 & 5/8". No park brake on transmission.

I would like to put it in the transit as the Allison is 2" longer than the 727 so the engine would not have to move, actually have an extra 3/8ths inch that way . The engine in a transit is straight down the middle so no driveline angle change because the transmission is a different length. The transit does have an extra cross member under the transmission due to the powertrain slide out feature on the transit.

I think I am massaging Ma Mopar rather well. Very pure.
