As anyone who has had a 440 big block can tell you----It runs Hot! A real big problem area seams to be with the middle 2 spark plugs which are on either side of the main branch of the exhaust manifold. I have lost many a good wire to this area--once, because of the heat sheild does not full protect the cap of the wire which then becomes toast and crumbles away--and once with the old piece of tin --basically rusting away and falling off. This causes rapid loss of the rubber boot--which usually can be smelled right before you are dialing 911.
I guess the question is ----Is there a better and more effective heat sheild to replace these very inadequate ones with?

If you will install a new set of HEAT SHIELDS and install a set of 8MM Sparkplug wires like the MSD UNIVERSAL SET so that they can be made longer than the custom sets allowing one to route the wires around the ends of the EXHAUST MANIFOLDS and up from the bottom to the sparkplugs.

By keeping the wires away from the MANIFOLD and coming up from the bottom to the sparkplugs you will find these wires last a long time as long as the carburetor A/F Mixture does not go LEAN to cause white-hot EXHAUST MANIFOLDS.

I believe that you are refering to the same problem I had. See the pictures in the new Album I just posted. It shows what happened to my plug wires half way up the long grade! The problem cannot be cured by rerouting the MSD wires as the tops of the spark plugs can't be moved.

First, get new plug wires and then go down to Napa and get the fiber glass boots/covers shown in the last picture. They are normally used on racing engines to protect the plug wires - duh! Get new metal shields, route the wires as Leslie suggests, but before installing put the protective covers on all eight plug wires. Be sure to properly follow the installation instructions so that the connector to the plug is properly protected and the cover won't slip.

I don't know the proper name or part number of the covers, so go to the album and click on the picture of the covers to expand it. Then right click on the picture and "save it as..." to a file on your computer. Then print it and take it down to Napa and tell them you want eight of these!

Install them on your new plug wires and all will be good.

Before you buy----check out the Jacobs Pro Fit kit with 90 degree ceramic boots. I remember them as being expensive but they have been very successful for me. The kit is similar to what Les recommended in that it is custom built and routed by you or your mechanic. Use the stock heat shields and route the wires away from heat. The web site is jacobselectronics.com. I have well over 50,000 miles with this setup and never a missfire. P/N 4480800 should work---check it out.
