Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Victoria, BC. Canada | #846 is nearly ready to roll. All systems - with the exception of the horn and auto A/C - are good to go. Ripped out the 6.5 Onan and got a Yammy 6000 (150/lbs lighter) residing there now with a powerful squirrel cage fan bathing it in cool air as it runs. I'm going to take it in (AGAIN) to have the front end alignment checked out and would like feedback from fellow owners on what specs I should use for the set-up. It steers pretty good but still requires frequent corrections as she wanders about enough that you can't really take your eyes off the road for more than a split second. I know it can be better. I just had the alignment done within the last 100 miles or so but that was over 3 yrs ago and I haven't used it; additionally, it has different wheels/tires on it now. Seems to be several different interpretations out there as to how the steering rack should be set up on these things. Does anyone have the 'magic-bullet' on - toe-in; toe-out; caster; camber yada, yada, yada? Need to tell the mechanic what the specs are. Thanks in advance for any and all help. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cottage Grove, OR | If you haven't done it already, you need to ensure that ALL play is out of the steering system between the steering wheel and the front wheel spindles. There are many connections/joints between the the steering wheel and the wheels. If you have movement in those components, aligning the wheels will be ineffective as the actual cause would not have been addressed. | ||

Just spent a bunch of time on the phone only to learn nobody does alignments on larger vehicles here on the Island anymore. WTF? Looks like it's a trip to the mainland (Vancouver) to bend-over for somebody else. As Stephen rightly suggested, I should endeavor to determine what, if any, play exists in the entire steering system - steering wheel to rubber wheels - before I let someone else sodomize my pocketbook. Going to look into it this weekend. Two more questions: Did I hear correctly that rear torsion bar (rubber) bushings are no longer available? How does one test to determine if either of these rear bushings are serviceable or failing/failed? Again, thanks. Terry | ||

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cottage Grove, OR | No. You have to identify what point(s) are causing the play. Is it the flex(rag) joints in the steering column? Next down is the steering gear. Any movement between the steering column and the output shaft. If yes it needs rebuilding. If no then continue to the next joint. Next is the link to the pitman arm. Is pitman arm pivot shaft able to be wiggled. And so forth until you get to the wheels. Much of this is best done with two people. One to move the steering wheel and one to FEEL for differences in movement between parts. You can feel differences in motion easier and more acurately than you can see differences. | ||

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Cottage Grove, OR | Before replacing the bushing, if greater rear end stabilization is needed/desired one should have installed a set of Timbren bushing between the trailing arm and the frame. How to do that has been discussed on this site and the Yahoo site. That comes before bushing replacement. As you know, coach stability is a function of both ends of the coach so both ends need to be evaluated if there is a stability question. | ||
