| It would seem that different starters are used on the bus drivetrain! I was surprised by that.. My starter turns the engine over very slowly and has excessive noise levels. There is a local outfit that will rebuild for $169. Starters for a mid 70's Chrysler 440 powered vehicle, go for around $50 (rebuilt). I bought one of those and found out the hard way, that it would not fit.
I suppose it relates to the different trans. After a lot of searching and cross-reference, it seems that the starter I need was used in a lot of Chrysler powered Clark fork lifts and John Deere tractors. Available, but pretty pricey.
Anyhow, does anyone know of a less expensive starter for the bus?

   Location: Cottage Grove, OR | I can't answer you basic question, but can confirm that the reason the starter is different is because the transmission you have also has a different bell housing and flywheel.
Beyond the applications you mentioned, that starter would have been used on many other applications using the Chrysler 440 and the Allison 540/545 transmission. I expect that a wider search would find those applications. I don't know if it would result in a lower price or not but sometimes the price is determined by the specialized application. It is a heavier duty starter than the standard starter. |

| I went ahead and dropped it off for rebuilding. I could find no automotive applications for this starter. It was used quite a bit on fork lifts and farm tractors. That doesn't produce the quantity needed to get the costs down..
Interestingly, it is a direct drive starter while the coach version is gear reduced.. |

| Starter was done later that day. Field coils were falling apart and shorting against the case a bit. They put 4 new coils in, replacing the original 2. They said it should have more torque than original..
I also got it started! That is the first time it has run in many years! I don't know how long it has been since it ran last.. |
