#846 - Cummins Swap | ||
Author: andy1canada (Show all albums) Howdy Folks! Going to give this another try as my first attempt didn't go so well on the 'Diner-conversion' thread (Will update/edit that soon). Started my Cummins swap by pulling off the bumper; only took better part of an hour. That sucker is HEAVY! Better part of a 100 lbs I bet. Will be looking to knock substantial weight off that baby while still retaining a 5000 lb towing standard. This will take a while as it will unfold as time and resources permit, so please be patient. More pics and hopefully some videos (FMC-TV) to follow. Cheers, Terry #846 |

Finally did an MPG calculation since the Cummins install. 90% of the miles were on the hwy averaging 65 miles per hour, with a good mix of steep hills as well as winding and flat stretches. Fuel full; 80/US gal water = 16,000 GVW. 12V Cummins with 4" exhaust; 3000 rpm Governor spring kit; 60 lb exhaust spring kit; P7100 fuel pump slightly tweaked for performance and economy. Distance travelled: 517 miles Diesel fuel burned: 40/Imp gals = 48/US gal. Improved from about 8/Imp mpg to 13/mpg. In US/gals that would be about 6.5/US mpg (typical) to 10.8/mpg. That's about a 65% improvement over my old 440'! I'm happy with that and will look to improving on it going forward. ie. would likely have better economy if I was cruising closer to 60 mph. Eh. | Solo - the 'camp-boss' says "Adios mis amigos"! | First night... serenity. | Roof rack turned out to be a godsend. Tons of room for extra firewood etc. She sits a tad higher in the rear if you noticed, and that's with only 20 psi in the airsprings.
After sitting for a year she's good-to-go to the lake for a few days. I think the 'Double-Rainbow' is a good sign that all will be well. | FINALLY! The old Ford Taurus fan steps back into service. It's pulling cool air through into the engine house at around 5000 CFM. I'm confident #846 will be a robust and cool-running 'Desert Rat' when I'm done with her. | Behind the new intercooler rad you can see I kept the awesome trans cooler from the 440' install that a PO (trucker) had installed. I've also added another smaller trans-cooler on the main radiator to further keep the 47RH cool.
This is the coolant heat exchanger I chose for the intercooler. It features 8 AN fittings which are about the largest flow for this class of cooler. It's also compact enough that I could work it into the engine house door cooling-center. | The ABS fitting I chose for the reservoir made it easy to adapt down to a 1" braided hose off the top (4") to get me a simple filler hose over to the rad fill access. The screw in plug also helps with bleeding air out of the system. | Overhead view of the live-bait-well pump. I also tee-ed off the outlet hose with a drain-cock fitting to easily drain the (approx 2-qts) from the system if needed. | I cut up some 1/8" plate to mount the left side of the cooler on while the right side simply bolted into the main frame rail. It was solid then but I also elected to put a small (adjustable tension) pipe strap stay on the top as well.
