#846 - Cummins Swap
Author: andy1canada (Show all albums)

Howdy Folks!

Going to give this another try as my first attempt didn't go so well on the 'Diner-conversion' thread (Will update/edit that soon).

Started my Cummins swap by pulling off the bumper; only took better part of an hour. That sucker is HEAVY! Better part of a 100 lbs I bet. Will be looking to knock substantial weight off that baby while still retaining a 5000 lb towing standard.

This will take a while as it will unfold as time and resources permit, so please be patient.

More pics and hopefully some videos (FMC-TV) to follow.

Cheers,
Terry

Took the better part of an hour to get this bitch off! Will look to shave 50 lbs or so off of it if possible.

Sure was brilliant of me to 'fill' the tank right before I do my diesel swap! 'Live-learn'

The 'Beast'! (1100-lbs. dry/36 1/2" long without fan; with fan - add 4") Will be bolting it to a rebuilt Chrysler 47RH trans (1994/1995) with an upgraded torque converter. From the center of the u-joint on the Rockwell to the rear inside face of the (OEM)rad-core measures approx. 76" +/- about 1/2". Add about another 5" or, 81 1/2" overall space between the center of the diff u-joint to the inside face of the rear wall alum/vented panel.

Found some time to finally rip the rad grill section off today. I'm not at all happy with how long it took me to do this small task. Maybe I'll look at somehow rigging it so it basically 'snaps' back into place. Now to find some jugs to drain the coolant from that monster of a rad.

Thought I'd include a pic of my alum dryer vent intake air hose (from the Donaldson to the carb) after a good thrashing when she tossed the power-steering hose on the way home from the rally. The buggered part hung right above the water pump. The double belt pulley (metal) on the water pump was also severely damaged when it let go. I'll show a better close pic of it when the engine is out.

There, more panels off. Are you guys okay now? Rad drained today. Will pull the rad tomorrow and jack her up. Terry #846

Finally got around to getting some numbers on this monster bumper unit. If you have one of these, it's 154 lbs with the ball on it; moreover, it's all hanging at the worst - rearmost - place on the coach.

3/4" std. socket with a pipe extension - pre-soaked with a good nut-buster overnight, a little grunt work and a small pry bar and presto - she's apart! SS section = 60 lbs. Iron section = 93 lbs.

Crane scale. Instructions not so good but fairly simple to figure out. Good to 300 kg./660 lbs with a 0.2/lb accuracy.

Rad out finally. Almost dropped the sucker on my foot (yes had steel toes on) as I took out the last upper bolt holding it to the shroud. Less beer next time :0

Help arrived to pull the engine/trans after lunch today. Will miss the distinct roar of that venerable ole' 440'!
