Northern Calif Work Day - May 2010

Another of the Northern CA workdays was held on May 8 in Gilroy at the home of coach #587. This workday was scheduled to help the Minden Mega Rally targeted coaches prepare for the trip and to just have a good time working on our coaches while trading thoughts and ideas and spinning wrenches and poking around with volt meters. We also enjoyed burgers for lunch and Toni's pasta for dinner.

Well they aren't working in this picture, but they are trading knowledge! Here are two new attendees, on the left is Tim Jacobsen with his father, Jerry Jacobsen next and they are talking auto AC systems with Eric Whedon, our host. As you recall, the Jacobsens are in the process of putting a new GM LY6 6.0 liter into coach #487. Carlton Camyre is on the right.


Well, they are still talking!! The coaches are from left to right #888-Camyre, #708-Miller, #587-Whedon and, on the right, #1046-Heinrichs. While the Jacobsen's coach couldn't attend, they still were able to come and be a part of the workday.


The Jacobsen's found Carlton Camyre's Detroit 8.2L TD interesting as they had not seen that installation before.


Here Carlton is getting some nonfunctining stop lights working again after determining that a previous owner had installed incorrect bulbs. Also note that the engine compartment doors were opened and seemed to just stay that way! I like this view of the coaches.


Here Eric Whedon is explaining the intricacies of a properly installed and functioning auto AC system to Jerry and Tim Jacobsen. He is using #1046 as the example.


Tim needed to get in closer for a better look. Coach #587 is in the background. Jerry has presented us with the usual position and view that is assumed when "working on an FMC" engine compartment. The proper placement of the vacuum check valves for the hydovac brake unit for carburated coaches vs for fuel injected coaches was also discussed.


While we had four coaches in attendance and another represented by its owners, we still have room for another coach.


This is one of the tools of the trade. This is the electric schematic for the auto portion of coaches from #646 and up found in the Service and Repair Manual. It was used for work on three of the coaches on this day.


Here is Eric doing something while Carlton is leaning on the engine door of his coach #888. Greg Miller's coach #708 is on the right in this photo and Stephen is leaning over the mirror arm of #1046 sneaking this picture of Eric. Somehow I missed getting a picture of Greg Miller this workday, but he spent most of the time under the front of his coach replacing an AC condenser fan motor. We heard banging noises and other words from time to time! For coaches 646 and above the condensers are under the front and for 645 and prior they are up on the roof.
