The Dieselfication of Coach 1046
Author: BigRabbitMan (Show all albums)

This album is dedicated to following the process of Coach #1046 being converted from a 1976 Chrysler 440-I with a 4spd Allison AT540 transmission to a 2006 GMC Duramax LBZ turbo diesel with a 6spd Allison 1000 double overdrive transmission. There is a companion discussion thread in the Mechanic's Corner section of the Forum area of this site.

Finally!! The first of the engine compartment/rear panels goes onto the coach.

One of the two batteries that the engine requires is placed on this platform made from Uni-strut secured to the orginal sturdy muffler support.

The new 4" straight through muffer is in the old muffler location.

It looks good from this side.

And from the back it is looking even better. At this point the rear panel with the door is installed. The louvered panel for the radiator is still loose. This is being done while elecrical work is still being done over on the right side.

The dash area is starting to take shape. Note that the dash instrument cluster (sitting on top of the dashboad) is now plugged in.

Help is good! Here Larry Enoksen is reaching through the read engine compartment door to assist Mark, my son laying down, to manipulate the muffler.

Anthony, standing, is assisting Eric with the wiring that is on the engine firewall.

What's that! The bumper is now mounted (with the assistance of Larry, Mark and Anthony).

Another view of the dash area. It is almost ready to close up.

The receiver hitch has now been installed. I need that to continue to tow my '87 Subaru Brat. Success is partially due to the constant supervision by Curiosity the cat!

You are looking at the adapter plate that was added to the shift lever on the transmission to allow for the difference in angles of the shift cables between the donor pickup and the FMC. In the donor, the cable came from about a 45 degree angle from above the transmission. In the FMC it comes from the horizontal so this plate was bolted to the shift lever and then the cable attached to the plate. The length of the radius between the input shaft of the transmission and the attachment point of the cable determines the length of the stroke of the shift lever up front.
